Ural A321 at Kazan on Jan 25th 2013, aircraft struck localizer antenna during go-around

A Ural Airlines Airbus A321-200, registration VQ-BOZ performing flight U6-3045 (dep Jan 24th) from Sharm el Sheikh (Egypt) to Kazan (Russia) with 222 passengers and 8 crew, was on final automatic approach to Kazan's runway 29R, visibility about 800 meters with cloud base at 100 feet, when the crew after breaking out of cloud at about 100 feet AGL initiated a go-around due to not being in a proper position to land on the runway. The aircraft struck the localizer antenna runway 11L but managed to climb out safely. The aircraft positioned for another approach to Kazan and landed safely. There were no injuries, the aircraft received damage (four through holes of various sizes in the fuselage skin) to its tail.

Russia's Emergency Ministry of Tatarstan confirmed the aircraft struck the localizer antenna during the go-around, but managed to land on its second approach to Kazan. There were no injuries, the aircraft was substantially damaged in its tail area, the next scheduled flight of the aircraft had to be flown by a replacement aircraft VQ-BOF.

The airline confirmed the aircraft was damaged when it struck the localizer however there were no injuries.

Rosaviatsia (Russia's Civil Aviation Authority) reported the aircraft received minor damage to its tail when it struck the localizer antenna on its first approach to Kazan.

In a following brief Rosaviatsia reported the visibility was 900 meters with a runway visibility range of 1500 meters in freezing fog. At the time when the crew initiated a go-around, the aircraft struck the localizer antenna for the opposite runway, but climbed out without further incident, positioned for another approach to the runway and landed safely. The aircraft received damage to the right hand flaps, right hand main gear, right hand main gear hydraulic lines, holes in the fuselage and dents to the right hand engine cowl. Rosaviatsia rated the occurrence a serious incident.

On Jan 28th Rosaviatsia recommended to introduce a vertical profile for ILS Cat I and Cat II approaches with crosschecks based on the markers (NDBs) and DME. At the same time the airport should temporarily declare the glideslope indications as failed.

Rostransnadzor (Russia's Ministry of Transport) opened an unscheduled administrative examination into the airline's operation.

The aircraft remained on the ground in Kazan for repairs until Mar 6th before being ferried to Novosibirsk for further maintenance, but suffered another incident during the ferry flight.

Kazan offers a runway 11L/29R of 3724 meters/12210 feet length with ILS approaches available to both 11L and 29R. The ILS runway 11L was NOTAMed unserviceable following the accident.
