A United Boeing 757-200, registration N560UA performing flight UA-512 from New York JFK,NY to San Francisco,CA (USA) with 117 people on board, was climbing out of JFK's runway 04L when the crew stopped the climb at 10,000 feet reporting they had needed to shut the left hand engine (PW2037) down due to an oil pressure problem and needed to return to JFK Airport. The aircraft landed safely on runway 04L about 25 minutes after departure.

A replacement Boeing 757-200 registration N510UA reached San Francisco with a delay of 2:50 hours.

A passenger reported the aircraft entered clouds at about 4000 feet, the flight became slightly turbulent. At about that time noise and a flash of light came from the left hand engine, the flashes and minor noise repeated a number of times. A short time later the captain announced the left hand engine had been shut down and they were returning to JFK. A different aircraft took them to San Francisco.
