An Air Canada Boeing 787-9, registration C-FGDX performing flight AC-21 from Vancouver,BC (Canada) to Hong Kong (China), was climbing through 12,000 feet out of Vancouver's runway 26L when the crew reported they needed to level off, they just had received a lightning strike. ATC cleared them to maintain their current altitude 12,000 feet while continuing in the general direction towards Hong Kong. The crew subsequently reported they had lost a cabin air compressor and the packs on the left hand side as result of the lightning strike. After maintaining 12,000 feet for about 45 minutes the crew requested to return to Vancouver and dump fuel, ATC informed them they needed to be at minimum 13,100 feet on the way back to Vancouver, the crew advised they were able to climb, and returned to Vancouver for a safe landing on runway 08L about 100 minutes after departure.

The flight was cancelled.

The aircraft is still on the ground in Vancouver on Sep 8th 2023 10 days after the occurrence.
