A West Air China Airbus A320-200, registration B-8286 performing flight PN-6444 from Nanning to Chongqing (China), was climbing through about 900 meters (2950 feet) out of Nanning's runway 05 when a number of birds impacted one of the engines (CFM56) causing vibrations of the airframe. The crew stopped the climb at 1700 meters and returned to Nanning for a safe landing on runway 05 about 40 minutes after departure.

Chinese media are reporting the captain of the flight said, at about 900 meters they saw a flock of birds flashing past the aircraft, then heard a boom and multiple impacts, the airframe subsequently was vibrating.

The airline reported that following the bird strike the crew applied standard operating procedures, followed ATC instructions, made a detailed assessment of the engine parameters and decided to return to Nanning as a precaution.

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in Nanning 3 days later.
