A Vietjet Airbus A321-200N, registration VN-A653 performing flight VJ-975 from Seoul (South Korea) to Phu Quoc (Vietnam) with 207 passengers and 7 crew, was enroute at FL360 over the South China Sea about 170nm northwest of Laoag (Philippines) when the crew decided to divert to Laoag due to an indication of an engine (PW1133G) failure. The aircraft entered a hold to burn off fuel and landed safely on Laoag's runway 19 about one hour after leaving FL360.

Philippines Civil Aviation Authority reported the aircraft diverted due to a technical problem, no engine failure was reported.

Vietnam's Civil Aviation Authority reported the aircraft diverted after sensors indicated a possible engine failure including increased engine vibrations. The crew took the correct decisions to divert.

A replacement A321-200N registration VN-A693 was dispatched to Laoag and took the passengers to Phu Quoc with a delay of about 16 hours.
