An Air India Boeing 777-300, registration VT-ALM performing flight AI-185 from Delhi (India) to Vancouver,BC (Canada), was enroute at FL300 about 150nm northwest of Delhi when the crew entered a high altitude hold at FL300 due to problems with the right hand engine (GE90). The aircraft subsequently drifted down to FL220 and returned to Delhi for a safe landing about 100 minutes after the onset of trouble.

Passengers reported they observed sparks from the right hand engine, the aircraft subsequently dumped fuel and returned to Delhi.

The airline reported a "technical issue" prompted the return to Delhi indicating it had not been a bird strike.

A replacement Boeing 777-300 registration VT-ALT is estimated to reach Vancouver with a delay of about 8:15 hours.
