A JAL Japan Airlines Boeing 767-300, registration JA621J performing flight JL-38 from Singapore (Singapore) to Tokyo Haneda (Japan), was climbing out of Singapore's runway 02L when an engine (CF6) emitted rumbling noise and bangs prompting the crew to stop the climb at 7000 feet. The aircraft entered a hold for about 55 minutes, then positioned for a return to Singapore and landed safely on runway 02R about 75 minutes after departure.

Passengers reported one of the engines emitted bangs and a rumbling noise.

The aircraft returned to service about 21 hours after landing back and reached Tokyo as flight JL-38D with a delay of about 24 hours.
