A United Boeing 767-300, registration N641UA performing flight UA-102 from Houston Intercontinental,TX (USA) to Munich (Germany), was enroute at FL350 about 360nm northwest of Newark,NJ (USA) in Canadian Airspace, when the crew decided to divert to Newark after the crew received a slats disagree indication and descended the aircraft to FL190. The aircraft landed safely on Newark's runway 22R about 2 hours after the decision to divert.

A passenger reported the crew announced they had received a slats disagree indication. The passenger could not detect whether fuel was dumped due to darkness, the crew indicated they were holding near Newark to work the related checklists. Emergency services checked the brakes after landing due to brakes temperatures due to an overspeed landing. The passenger perceived flight, cabin and ground crews as very professional. The left hand slats and flaps were still extended after arrival at the gate.

The aircraft returned to service after about 18 hours on the ground in Newark.
