A PIA Pakistan International Airlines Avions de Transport Regional ATR-42-500, registration AP-BHI performing flight PK-609 from Lahore to Gilgit (Pakistan), was departing Lahore's runway 36R when the rudder suffered a trim runaway causing full deflection of the rudder. Yawing to the left the crew continued the takeoff and climbed the aircraft in a left turn to 3500 feet and returned to Lahore for a safe landing on runway 36R about 12 minutes after departure.

The occurrence became known when the airline presented Certificates of Appreciation to both pilots for an "exceptional display of airmanship in handling a flight rudder control defect on ATR AP-BHI" signed on Sep 21st 2022.

PIA's Flight Safety Department stated the best safety device in any aircraft is a "well trained crew" elaborating that during takeoff from Lahore their ATR-42 suffered a rudder trim runaway causing full deflection of the rudder. The crew skillfully managed to safely land back in Lahore.
