A Lufthansa Airbus A320-200, registration D-AIQA performing flight LH-1300 from Frankfurt/Main (Germany) to Istanbul Ataturk (Turkey), was enroute at FL350 over Slovenia about 120nm southsouthwest of Vienna (Austria), when the crew decided to divert to Vienna due to several instruments malfunctioning. The aircraft landed safely on Vienna's runway 34 about 50 minutes later.

The remainder of the flight was cancelled, the passengers were rebooked onto other flights.

The incident aircraft was able to depart Vienna about 3 hours after landing and position to Frankfurt as flight LH-9923 and resumed service the following morning about 16 hours after landing in Vienna.

Two indepent sources at the airport hinted that one half of the cockpit went dark.

The airline confirmed a minor technical problem that would have permitted the flight to continue to Istanbul, however, due to better availability of spare parts and mechanics at the base in Vienna the crew decided to divert to Vienna without requesting assistance.

Austria's Sicherheitsuntersuchungsstelle des Bundes (SUB, Federal Safety Investigation Unit) reported the aircraft suffered an electronic malfunction in the area of the cockpit instrument displays, which was not critical to the safety of flight. The operating manual nonetheless required an immediate repair, the crew therefore decided to divert to Vienna for a stable and controlled approach and landing, where optimal technical assistance was available. A report has been properly received, the SUB rated the occurrence an incident and did not open an investigation.
