An Air India Airbus A321-200, registration VT-PPF performing flight AI-549 from Chennai to Port Blair (India) with 117 passengers and 6 crew, was climbing out of Chennai when the crew stopped the climb at FL290 and returned to Chennai due to an engine (CFM56) malfunction. The aircraft landed safely back in Chennai about 55 minutes after departure.

A replacement A320-200N registration VT-CIF reached Port Blair with a delay of 2:40 hours.

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in Chennai about 10 hours after landing back.
