An American Airlines Airbus A321-200, registration N908AA performing flight AA-2878 from Miami,FL to Washington National,DC (USA) with 188 people on board, was climbing out of Miami when the crew stopped the climb at 16,000 feet reporting an odour on board. The crew decided to return to Miami for a safe landing on runway 27 about 40 minutes after departure.

A replacement A319-100 registration N8009T reached Washington with a delay of 12.5 hours.

The FAA reported a post flight inspection of N908AA revealed the R2 panel was missing and the emergency exit slide had separated.
