A Canadian North Boeing 737-200, registration C-GDPA performing flight 5T-228 from Yellowknife,NT to Kuglutuk,NU (Canada) with 13 passengers and 4 crew, was climbing out of Yellowknife's runway 34 when the crew stopped the climb at 3000 feet due to the left hand engine (JT8D) experiencing a compressor stall/surge followed by abnormal engine noises. The aircraft returned to Yellowknife for a safe landing on runway 34 about 20 minutes after departure.

The Canadian TSB reported following the uneventful landing emergency services inspected the aircraft and did not see any obvious signs of damage or fire of the left hand engine. The crew shut the engine down and taxied to the apron. An inspection by maintenance revealed evidence of a bird strike, the vortex dissipator was damaged. Further inspection revealed significant damage the fan blades.
