A PIA Pakistan International Airlines Avion de Transport Regional ATR-42-500, registration AP-BHM performing flight PK-586 from Karachi to Bahawalpur (Pakistan) with 47 passengers and 4 crew, was climbing out of Karachi about 40nm from the airport when a passenger claimed there was a risk the aircraft would be hijacked. Cabin crew informed the captain who decided to return to Karachi where the aircraft landed safely about 35 minutes after departure and taxied to a remote location at the airport. Police arrested the passenger claiming the risk of a hijack.

Other passengers reported the man was heavily arguing with a flight attendant when the dispute escalated and he claimed there was a risk of a hijack.

Police reported the passenger said he voiced the remark of a risk of hijack in anger but as a joke. No suspicious items were found.

The aircraft departed Karachi again with a delay of 2:50 hours.
