A Jazz Canadair CRJ-900, registration C-GJZS performing flight QK-918 from Toronto,ON to Moncton,NB (Canada) with 16 passengers and 4 crew, was climbing out of Toronto's runway 23 when shortly after departure the crew noticed vibrations of 1.4 units from the left hand engine's (CF34) fan, though the vibration remained within permitted limits. While the aircraft continued to climb the vibrations slowly increased. After levelling off at FL390 the vibrations reached the yellow range from 3.7 to 4.0 units. The crew worked the related checklists, descended the aircraft to reduce engine power and tried to stabilize the vibrations without success. With the vibrations remaining at 3.3 units the crew elected to shut the engine down and returned to Toronto for a safe landing about 90 minutes after departure.

The Canadian TSB reported the right hand engine vibrations remained at 0.04 to 0.05 units throughout the flight. Maintenance found no defects. The fan blade retaining pins were replaced and the engine tested with results in the acceptable range.
