A SA Express Canadair CRJ-200 on behalf of South African Airways, registration ZS-NMM performing flight XZ-1763/SA-1763 from Johannesburg (South Africa) to Gaborone (Botswana), was climbing out of Johannesburg when the crew reported electrical problems, stopped the climb at 9000 feet and returned to Johannesburg for a safe landing with the air driven generator (ADG) deployed about 30 minutes after departure.

Ground Observer Johan Botha reported he heard a noise he believed to be coming from an Ilyushin IL-76 and ran out of his home to recognize the CRJ-200 on approach with the ADG deployed.

The flight to Gaborone was cancelled.

According to the AOM the ADG deploys only on total AC (electrical alternate current) failure and provides the aircraft with electrical backup power.
