Eurowings A319 near Berlin on Feb 23rd 2020, problems with both engines

A Eurowings Airbus A319-100, registration D-AKNV performing flight EW-2020 from Stuttgart to Berlin Tegel (Germany), had been enroute at FL260 and was descending towards Berlin cleared to descend to FL140 when at about FL170 the crew increased the descent from about 1800 fpm to 3000 fpm, the IAS increased from 240 to about 310 KIAS, the crew reported vibrations on both engines (CFM56) and smoke in the cockpit. ATC cleared the flight to descend to FL070. When the aircraft reached about 310 KIAS the crew began to level off, vertical speed reached 0 fpm at about FL100, after a few minutes continued a shallow descent towards Tegel and continued for a safe landing on runway 26R about 15 minutes after the crew increased the descent.

A listener on frequency reported the crew advised ATC they had vibrations on both engines and smoke in the cockpit.

A passenger reported both engines had flamed out due to ice and were successfully restarted in flight. Following the event there was a strong smell of exhaust fumes in the cabin. The flight crew announced they were having issues and were working the checklists.

The occurrence aircraft remained on the ground in Tegel for about 36 hours before returning to service.

Weather scientist SatWx Aviation told The Aviation Herald based on the closest weathersoundings of Feb 24th 2020 00:00Z about 5.5 hours after the later event: "It shows that the atmosphere was pretty cold and humid all the way up, so there's potential for quite a bit of super-cooled water and hence icing."

Germany's BFU reported on Feb 26h 2020 that the incidents have been reported to the BFU, they were not rated serious incidents or accidents and are not going to be investigated.
