The Dutch Onderzoeksraad (DSB) reported on Dec 16th 2019, that both pilots recognized the approach was not stabilized and the aircraft was not descending as rapidly as expected. The captain still saw the possibility to correct the situation and continue for a landing, the first officer expected the captain to correct the profile, however, the pilots did not discuss the situation. Following the 500 feet call and the first officers announcement the approach was not stabilized, a go around should have been executed according to standard operating procedures by KLM. Following the EGPWS warning the first officer considered to call a "Go Around", however, still did not call for a go around. Cockpit Resource Management (CRM) had been taught to both pilots to handle unwanted and unexpected situations in flight regardless of position or rank. The airline opened a human factors research case. Although both pilots realized the situation they were in the commander was convinced a safe landing can be made. His experience, the length of the runway 18R and the familiarity with Schiphol Airport may have played a role, commercial pressures (a go around would have created a delay) may also have influenced the decisions. The absence of discussion between the crew helped the situation to develop. The occurrence thus highlights the importance of correctly applying CRM principles.
