An American Airlines Airbus A320-200, registration N673AW performing flight AA-436 from San Diego,CA to Charlotte,NC (USA) with 148 passengers and 5 crew, was climbing out of San Diego when the crew stopped the climb at about FL230 reporting smoke in the cockpit and decided to divert to Yuma,AZ for a safe landing on runway 21R about 25 minutes after stopping the climb.

A replacement A320-200 registration N667AW reached Charlotte with a delay of about 10.5 hours.
