An American Airlines Airbus A319-100, registration N9022G performing flight AA-2569 from Miami,FL (USA) to Toronto,ON (Canada), was in contact with Toronto approach control when ATC cleared the aircraft for an ILS or visual approach to Toronto's runway 06L and instructed the crew to contact tower upon reaching VEPNA (4.6nm before the runway threshold). The crew contacted tower at 2.1nm before the threshold reporting they were on short final for runway 06L. Tower passed instructions in case of a missed approach, the crew acknowledged then stated they were on short final for runway 06R. Tower did not notice the mistake, however, from now on the crew maneouvered to approach runway 06R. Tower cleared the aircraft to land on runway 06L. The crew elected to go around just before the runway 06R threshold because they saw another aircraft (an Air Canada Boeing 787-9) on their runway. The aircraft positioned for another approach and landed safely on runway 06L.
