An Air Canada Rouge Airbus A319-100, registration C-FZUG performing flight RV-1653 from Miami,FL (USA) to Montreal,QC (Canada) with 130 passengers and 5 crew, was enroute about 10 minutes prior to reaching the top of descent when the crew observed the left hand engine (CFM56) show indications of a compressor stall with N1 running back, EGT increasing and vibrations developing. The crew worked the related checklists, declared PAN PAN and continued to Montreal. During the descent into Montreal all engine parameters returned to normal. The aircraft landed safely.

The Canadian TSB reported maintenance performed a borescopic inspection of the engine without finding any anomaly. The fuel pump and hydro mechanical unit were replaced, tests were satisfactorily.

The aircraft returned to service 4 days later.
