A Lufthansa Airbus A340-600, registration D-AIHF performing flight LH-447 (dep Oct 11th) from Denver,CO (USA) to Frankfurt/Main (Germany), was enroute when two flight attendants working in the aft galley began to complain about serious headache, that they thought was caused by glue like fumes in the galley. The flight was continued to Frankfurt, the captain requested emergency services on stand by. The aircraft landed safely and taxied to the gate with emergency services in trail.

Emergency services identified a container containing Polyalkylamines (derivative of ammonia) as possible source of the fumes, however, the container, that had been stowed unsecured in the aft cargo hold, showed no indication of damage or leakage. The source of fumes could so far not be identified with certainty.

Polyalkylamides are rated hazardeous goods by NOAA being a corrosive and highly flammable liquid that (in both liquid and vapour form) can cause toxic effects like severe burns to skin and eyes and the vapour of which can cause dizziness or suffocation.
