A Lufthansa Airbus A340-600, registration D-AIHF performing flight LH-455 from San Francisco,CA (USA) to Frankfurt/Main (Germany), was enroute at FL300 about 370nm north of San Francisco when the crew decided to return to San Francisco. The aircraft descended to FL290 for the return. On approach to San Francisco the crew advised ATC one of the engines (Trent 556) was reduced to idle thrust, a normal landing would occur and no assistance was needed on the ground. The aircraft landed on San Francisco's runway 28R about one hour after turning around.

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in San Francisco about 19 hours after landing back.
