A Kenya Airways Boeing 787-8, registration 5Y-KZD performing flight KQ-762 from Nairobi (Kenya) to Johannesburg (South Africa) with 142 passengers and 10 crew, was enroute at FL380 about 240nm northwest of Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) when the crew received indications the left hand engine (GEnx) overheated followed by an engine fire warning. The crew shut the engine down, the fire warning ceased before the fire suppression system was activated, the crew descended the aircraft to FL250 and diverted to Dar es Salaam for a safe landing about 45 minutes later.

The airline reported on Apr 9th 2019 the aircraft was enroute at FL380 when the crew received indication one of the engines was overheating followed by the FIRE ENG L EICAS indication. Upon completion of the first four memory items the fire warning ceased, the fire bottle thus was not discharged. The crew completed the checklists and diverted to Dar es Salaam.

The remainder of the flight was cancelled, the passengers were taken to hotels and taken to Johannesburg the following day on a South African Airways flight.
