An American Airlines Boeing 757-200, registration N639AA performing flight AA-443 from New York JFK,NY to Miami,FL (USA), was climbing out of New York when seat row 14A-C came loose. The crew stopped the climb at 16,000 feet and returned to New York's JFK Airport for a safe landing about 40 minutes after departure.

A replacement Boeing 757-200 registration N686AA reached Miami with a delay of 3:50 hours.

The FAA have opened an investigation reporting that the airline has found additional aircraft showing the same issue. In all these cases maintenance had been done to the aircraft with the seats being removed and subsequently re-installed. It appears the seats were not propery secured upon re-installation by maintenance personnel.

The airline reported that a maintenance team has been flown out of Tulsa to New York to examine all 8 other aircraft that may have the same problem. An internal investigation is under way to check whether there is an issue with a certain model of the seat and how they fit into the tracking to secure the seats. The seats had been installed by American Airlines and contract maintenance, the issue does not appear to be tied to a particular maintenance facility or work group.

Two days earlier another American Boeing 757-200 had the same issue, see Incident: American B752 near New York on Sep 29th 2012, seat row has screws loose.
