An Ural Airlines Airbus A320-200, registration VQ-BAG performing flight U6-2861 from Yekaterinburg (Russia) to Samarkand (Uzbekistan) with 41 passengers and 6 crew, was enroute at FL370 about 110nm north of Samarkand still in the airspace of Kazakhstan when the crew decided to return to Ekaterinburg due to a technical problem. The aircraft climbed to FL380 for the return and landed safely back in Ekaterinburg about 2.5 hours after the decision to return.

A replacement A320-200 registration VQ-BNI departed about 2 hours after landing and reached Samarkand with a delay of 7 hours.

Ural's Transport Investigation Department reported the aircraft performed a forced landing into Ekaterinburg, no damage to the aircraft and no injuries, but did not provide further details. The department is looking into the occurrence.

The airline reported the aircraft returned due to a technical malfunction, no emergency or priority was declared.
