An American Airlines Boeing 737-800, registration N856NN performing flight AA-1191 from Chicago O'Hare,IL to Newark,NJ (USA), was climbing through FL230 out of Chicago when the crew declared emergency due to an odour on board and decided to return to Chicago. The aircraft landed safely on Chicago's runway 10L about 35 minutes after departure. The crew advised that the odour had subsided in the meantime and taxied the aircraft to the apron.
