A UTAir Boeing 737-800, registration VQ-BQP performing flight UT-247 from Moscow Vnukovo to Surgut (Russia), was in the climb out of Vnukovo's runway 06 when the crew stopped the climb at FL110 reporting smoke in the cockpit. The aircraft returned to Vnukovo for a safe landing on runway 06 about 25 minutes after departure. Emergency services did not find any trace of fire, smoke or heat.

The airline reported there was an "unpleasant odour" in the cabin prompting the return. Maintenance however could not find anything abnormal.

A replacement Boeing 737-800 registration VQ-BQR reached Surgut with a delay of 3.5 hours.

The occurrence aircraft returned to service about 17 hours after landing.
