A passenger reported the captain announced they had a flaps indication problem, would land on JFK's longest runway 31L at a higher than normal speed with emergency services on stand by. Instructions were run for a possible evacuation. The aircraft landed quite fast and braked heavily. After coming to a stop the captain announced three times that everybody should remain seated. About 1-2 minutes after coming to a stop with about 6000 feet of runway remaining the aircraft taxied off the runway.
The occurrence aircraft returned to service about 24 hours after the landing.
