An American Airlines Boeing 737-800, registration N914NN performing flight AA-106 from Phoenix,AZ to New York JFK,NY (USA) with 166 people on board, was on approach to JFK when the crew stopped the descent at 2500 feet advising they had an issue and requested vectors while working the checklists. Approach responded "I like issues" and issued vectors. The crew subsequently declared emergency reporting they had a flaps disagreement indication and needed a long runway, requesting 22R. ATC offered 31L, the crew accepted and advised they would land with split flaps, they weren't sure whether it was just an indication problem. The aircraft landed safely on runway 31L at a higher speed than normal (touchdown about 162 knots over ground) about 15 minutes after aborting the descent.

A passenger reported the captain announced they had a flaps indication problem, would land on JFK's longest runway 31L at a higher than normal speed with emergency services on stand by. Instructions were run for a possible evacuation. The aircraft landed quite fast and braked heavily. After coming to a stop the captain announced three times that everybody should remain seated. About 1-2 minutes after coming to a stop with about 6000 feet of runway remaining the aircraft taxied off the runway.

The occurrence aircraft returned to service about 24 hours after the landing.
