An American Airlines Boeing 757-200, registration N196AA performing flight AA-1391 from Miami,FL (USA) to Saint Thomas (US Virgin Islands), was in the initial climb out of Miami's runway 08R when the crew requested to level off at 5000 feet and advised they would be returning to Miami. A few minutes later the crew reported they had a "potential airspeed malfunction". The aircraft returned to Miami for a safe landing on runway 09 about 13 minutes after departure.

A replacement Boeing 757-200 registration N189AN reached Saint Thomas with a delay of 4:50 hours.

The US Virgin Islands amongst other Islands in the region are estimated to be hit by category 5 Hurricane Irma during the night from Sep 5th to 6th.
