An American Airlines Boeing 777-200, registration N754AN performing flight AA-974 from Rio de Janeiro Galeao,RJ (Brazil) to New York JFK,NY (USA) with 149 passengers, was enroute at FL360 about 80nm northnorthwest of Brasilia,DF (Brazil) when the crew observed an overtemperature indication for one of the engines (Trent 895), reduced the engine to idle thrust, drifted the aircraft down to FL220 and returned to Rio de Janeiro, where the aircraft landed safely about 2:10 hours later.
