An American Airlines Airbus A321-200, registration N189UW performing flight AA-423 from Phoenix,AZ to Charlotte,NC (USA), departed runway 25R and was climbing through 8000 feet when the crew reported they "just took a large bird strike" and wanted to return to Phoenix, no damage was visible from the cockpit, however, it was possible the radome might have taken damage. The aircraft landed safely on Phoenix's runway 25R about 12 minutes after departure and taxied to the apron advising no assistance was needed.

On May 11th 2016 the FAA reported the occurrence was rated an accident, the aircraft received substantial damage to the fuselage below the windshield.

A replacement A321-200 registration N919US reached Charlotte with a delay of 90 minutes.
