A Volotea Boeing 717-200, registration EI-EWJ performing flight V7-1779 from Olbia to Verona (Italy), was in the initial climb out of runway 23 just before gear retraction when the left hand engine (BR715) lost power, EGT went above limit and N2 dropped. The crew declared emergency, shut the engine down and continued the climb to initial 3000 feet MSL following the engine out departure route to maintain terrain clearance, however, detected an unusally low climb rate and spotted, that over the engine failure the gear had not yet been retracted. Following gear retraction the climb rate became normal for engine out operation, the aircraft climbed to 4000 feet as instructed by ATC. The crew checked weather conditions of the aerodromes around and decided to return to Olbia, where the aircraft landed safely on runway 23 about 25 minutes after departure. Emergency services reported metallic debris in the engine exhaust, the aircraft taxied to the apron, where passengers disembarked normally.

The flight was cancelled, the passengers were rebooked onto other flights.

An examination of the engine revealed substantial internal core damage, the engine needs to be replaced.

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground about 128 hours after landing.
