The FAA reported the battery of a passenger's laptop had caught fire.
Jetblue reported the aircraft diverted due to smoke emanating from a passenger's carry on luggage, which held an electronic device. There have been no injuries and no damage to the aircraft.
The aircraft remained on the ground for about 2.5 hours, then continued the journey and reached San Francisco with a delay of about 3 hours.
Emergency services reported they were alerted to a backpack by a passenger, which contained a laptop and a charging device, which had emitted smoke and was found with a small burn hole at its side. It turned out during subsequent investigation that a second charging device and a second set of batteries were in the side pocket of the backpack. The battery overheating had been located in the side pocket of the backpack, which contained no other items, and was identified to be a LG HG2 18650 Lithium Ion battery (capacity 3000mAh), which according to the passenger owning the backpack was used to operate a portable fan in the checked luggage.
