An Aer Lingus Airbus A321-200, registration EI-CPE performing flight EI-451 from Naples (Italy) to Dublin (Ireland) with 148 passengers and 7 crew, was in the initial climb out of Naples' runway 24 when the aircraft flew through a flock of birds, an engine (CFM56) ingested a bird. The crew stopped the climb at 9000 feet and returned to Naples for a safe landing on runway 24 about 40 minutes after departure.

The flight was cancelled, the passengers were rebooked onto other flights.

A passenger said, the crew announced a pigeon had hit an engine.
