A 1time McDonnell Douglas MD-83, registration ZS-OPZ performing flight T6-646 from Cape Town to Durban (South Africa), was enroute at FL350 near the top of descent when the crew received indications of anomalies for the left hand engine (JT8D) and shut the engine down. The aircraft continued for a safe landing in Durban.

A replacement aircraft performed the return flight T6-647 and reached Cape Town with a delay of 2 hours.

The airline confirmed the aircraft was the same that was involved in the right hand engine failure earlier this month, following a CAA statement believed to be uncontained but proven by pictorial evidence to be contained (The Aviation Herald is still waiting for an updated statement by South Africa's CAA on this), see: Incident: 1time MD83 at Durban on Aug 5th 2012, engine shut down in flight after contained engine failure. The airline said, the two engine problems are unrelated and concerned different engines.
