A Delta Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-88, registration N918DL performing flight DL-1591 from Charlotte,NC to Atlanta,GA (USA) with 122 people on board, was climbing out of Charlotte's runway 18C when the crew reported they had encountered a flock of birds at about 1000 feet, it looked like sparrows, everything was working fine so far. After contacting departure the crew stopped the climb at 4000 feet however and decided to return to Charlotte. The aircraft landed safely on Charlotte's runway 18R about 15 minutes after departure.

Maintenance was seen checking the right hand engine (JT8D) after landing back.

The airline reported the aircraft returned following a bird strike. The passengers were accomodated on other flights.

The aircraft is still on the ground in Charlotte.
