A Gol Transportes Aereos Boeing 737-800, registration PR-GXH performing flight G3-9139 from Goiania,GO to Rio de Janeiro Galeao,RJ (Brazil), departed Goiania's runway 14 and was climbing through about 2350 feet AGL at 220 KIAS when the crew sighted a flock of birds (about 2-10 birds), the left hand engine (CFM56) ingested a number of birds and began to vibrate prompting the crew to stop the climb at 7000 feet, shut the engine down and returned to Goiania for a safe landing on runway 14 about 35 minutes after departure.

Brazil's CENIPA reported the left hand engine received damage to the engine inlet and engine as result of multiple birds being ingested. The engine suffered severe vibrations prompting the crew to shut the engine down.

The airline reported the aircraft needed to return to Goiana following a collision with birds. The aircraft landed safely, a replacement aircraft was estimated to take the passengers to Rio de Janeiro departing with a delay of 3:45 hours.

A replacement Boeing 737-800 registration PR-GTT positioned to Goiana, resumed flight G3-9139 and reached Rio de Janeiro with a delay of 5 hours.

The aircraft was able to resume service 46 hours after landing back.
