An Air France Boeing 777-200, registration F-GSPL performing flight AF-406 (dep Aug 5th) from Paris Charles de Gaulle (France) to Santiago (Chile) with 306 people on board, was on approach to Santiago around 07:30L (11:30Z) descending through FL180 when the aircraft encountered severe turbulence. One passenger and one flight attendant received serious injuries on the lower limb area, 5 flight attendants received minor injuries in the turbulence encounter. The aircraft continued for a safe landing.

The French BEA reported Chile's Authorities are investigating the accident.

The accident aircraft was able to depart for the return flight AF-401 on schedule following a scheduled ground time of 8.5 hours.
