A Taban Air McDonnell Douglas MD-88, registration EP-TBB performing flight HH-6295 from Tehran Mehrabad to Shiraz (Iran) with 130 people on board, was in the initial climb out of Tehran's runway 29L when the crew stopped the climb at about 5000 feet and shut the left hand engine (JT8D) down due to a mechanical problem. The aircraft returned to Mehrabad Airport for a safe landing on runway 29L about 10 minutes after departure and taxied to the apron. Emergency services checked the aircraft, there was no evidence of fire.

Tehran's Fire Department reported that fire trucks from three fire stations with 125 fire fighters were dispatched to Mehrabad Airport, but did not need to take action and returned to their stations.

According to Iran's News Agency IRNA a ground observer reported there were streaks of flame from the aircraft visible over several kilometers.
