A Pawa Dominicana McDonnell Douglas MD-87, registration HI978 performing flight 7N-750 from San Juan (Puerto Rico) to Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic) with 112 people on board, was in the initial climb out of San Juan's runway 08 when the crew declared Mayday reporting the failure of the left hand engine (JT8D) and requested an immediate return to San Juan via left hand turns, no emergency services were needed. The aircraft joined a left downwind to runway 08 while tower instructed aircraft on approach to runway 08 to go around. The MD-87 landed safely on runway 08 about 10 minutes after departure and taxied to the apron.

The airline confirmed an engine failure on departure from San Juan. The passengers returned to the terminal waiting for a replacement aircraft.
