A United Boeing 747-400, registration N118UA performing flight UA-837 from San Francisco,CA (USA) to Tokyo Narita (Japan) with 202 passengers and 15 crew, was climbing out of San Francisco's runway 28R when the crew stopped the climb at 8000 feet reporting a #2 engine (PW4056, inboard left) compressor stall, their climb performance would be slightly degraded, they wanted to dump fuel and return to San Francisco. Air Traffic Control informed the crew that another flight crew had observed flames from the #2 engine, the crew acknowledged and stated that was normal for a compressor stall. The crew subsequently reported they needed to shut the engine down. The aircraft dumped fuel and landed safely back on San Francisco's runway 28R about 85 minutes after departure.

A replacement Boeing 747-400 registration N119UA and reached Tokyo with a delay of 5 hours.

The airline reported an engine suffered a mechanical issue.

A ground observer noticed a Boeing 747 departing San Francisco Airport when he thought he had seen the aircraft flashing and looked towards the aircraft, when a second flash occurred from the #2 engine and about that time the sound of the first bang arrived. A third flash became visible, a total of three bang sounds arrived at the observer's position.
