A United Boeing 767-300, registration N657UA performing flight UA-846 (Dep Nov 24th) from Santiago (Chile) to Houston,TX (USA), was enroute at FL340 about 130nm westnorthwest of San Jose (Costa Rica) over the Pacific Ocean when the crew decided to divert to San Jose reporting an electrical burning odour and electrical problems. The aircraft landed safely on San Jose's runway 07 about 25 minutes later. Emergency services checked the aircraft, the aircraft taxied to the apron.

A passenger reported there was smell of smoke, the crew subsequently announced they were diverting to San Jose due to an electrical problem. The aircraft vibrated during the descent. The (electric) seats could not be returned to their upright positions, flight attendants needed to manually return those seats to their upright position.

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in San Jose about 13 hours after landing.
