A United Boeing 767-300, registration N657UA performing flight UA-16 from Newark,NJ (USA) to London Heathrow,EN (UK), was enroute at FL330 about 140nm northeast of Boston,MA (USA) when the crew decided to turn around and divert to Boston, where the aircraft landed safely on runway 22L about 85 minutes after departure.

The FAA reported: "United Airlines Flight 16 safely diverted to Boston Logan International Airport around 10:50 p.m. local time on Tuesday, Dec. 31, after the crew reported a lightning strike. The Boeing 767-300 departed from Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey and was headed to Heathrow Airport in London. The FAA will investigate."
