An Air India Express Boeing 737-800, registration VT-AXZ performing flight IX-885 from Mangalore (India) to Dammam (Saudi Arabia) with 131 passengers and 9 crew, stopped the climb out of Mangalore at FL250 and diverted to Kochi for a safe landing about 60 minutes after departure.

The aircraft remained on the ground for about 3 hours, then departed, climbed to FL360 and reached Dammam with a delay of 4 hours.

Kochi's Cochin Airport reported the aircraft diverted to Kochi reporting a suspected tail pipe fire, that was observed about 8 minutes after departure from Mangalore. The aircraft could not return to Mangalore due to landing weight considerations explaining that due to the fuel needed to reach Dammam the gross weight of the aircraft would have required a longer runway than available. After landing there was no evidence of any engine (CFM56) related fire. The aircraft was examined and released to continue the flight.
