An Air India Express Boeing 737-800, registration VT-AXZ performing flight IX-539 from Thiruvananthapuram (India) to Dubai (United Arab Emirates) with 178 people on board, was enroute at FL360 over the Arabian Sea about 350nm northwest of Thiruvananthapuram when the crew first initiated a descent to FL350 and a return to Thiruvananthapuram. The crew subsequently initiated a further descent to FL250 reporting problems with the air conditioning system on board. The aircraft landed safely on Thiruvananthapuram's runway 32 about 110 minutes after leaving FL360.

A replacement Boeing 737-800 registration VT-GHA reached Dubai with a delay of about 4.5 hours.
