Silver SF34 at Fairmont on Aug 7th 2012, landed on wrong airport

A Silver Airways Saab 340B on behalf of United, registration N346AG performing flight 3M-4049/UA-4049 from Morgantown,WV to Clarksburg,WV (USA) with 11 passengers and 3 crew, landed on Fairmont's,WV runway 05 about halfway into the scheduled 25 minutes/25nm hop and about 11nm short of its scheduled destination. The aircraft came to a safe stop on the runway around 23:30L.

The passengers were taken to their destination by taxis.

Fairmont Airport commented the landing was obviously a mistake, the crew believed they had landed in Clarksburg.

The FAA confirmed an investigation into the incident has been opened.

The airline began operating the route on Aug 2nd 2012, flight 3M-4049/UA-4049 originates at Washington Dulles Airport.

Fairmont offers a runway 05/23 of 3194 feet/973 meters length and 75 feet/23 meters width. Fairmont is an uncontrolled airfield.

Clarksburg offers a runway 03/21 of 7000 feet/2134 meters length and 150 feet/45 meters width, tower control services are offered during the day, at the time of the arrival the aerodrome was uncontrolled.
