A Stobart Air Avions de Transport Regional ATR-72-212A on behalf of Aer Lingus, registration EI-FCY performing flight RE-3701/EI-3701 from Birmingham,EN (UK) to Cork (Ireland) with 69 passengers and 4 crew, was enroute at FL160 nearing the top of descent when the crew declared emergency reporting smoke in the cockpit. During the initial descent the crew reported the smoke was dissipating, later on approach advised they would taxi in and just requested emergency services to follow them to the stand. The aircraft landed safely on Cork's runway 35 about 25 minutes after declaring emergency and taxied to the apron.

The occurrence aircraft remained on the ground for 13 hours, then positioned to Dublin, remained on the ground in Dublin over night and resumed service 21 hours after landing in Cork.

The Irish AAIU rated the occurrence a serious incident and opened an investigation.
