A United Boeing 737-900, registration N37465 performing flight UA-899 from Albany,NY to Chicago O'Hare,IL (USA) with 138 people on board, departed Albany's runway 01 and was climbing out. After contacting departure air traffic control advised that tower had observed the left main gear was still "down" (the last word a bit unreadable, can be confused with "up"). The crew acknowledged with a slight surprise, stopped the climb at 4000 feet and decided to return to Albany declaring an emergency believing the left main gear would perhaps not extend and requested a low approach to have the gear inspected. Some time later, after further communication with air traffic control re-affirming the left main gear had never retracted, the crew advised that a low approach was not needed and they would proceed directly for a full stop landing. The aircraft landed safely on Albany's runway 01 about 25 minutes after departure.

Both left main tyres had been replaced just prior to departure and the left main gear pin had been forgotten. The gear pin was removed and the aircraft was refuelled for departure.

However, the flight was subsequently cancelled.

Information running within the airline suggests that the captain remained "blissfully unaware" of the fact, that the left main gear had not retracted upon selecting the gear up despite the gear disagree indications. As result the flight crew was removed from duty and the flight was cancelled. The passengers were rebooked onto the next flights.

The occurrence aircraft remained on the ground for 24 hours and resumed service as next day's flight UA-899.
