Passengers reported the engine emitted 15 bangs.
The FAA reported: "United Airlines Flight 102 returned safely to George Bush International Airport in Houston, Texas, around 7 p.m. local time on Friday, June 19, after the crew reported an engine issue. The Boeing 777 was traveling to Munich International Airport in Germany."
A replacement Boeing 777-200 registration N798UA reached Munich with a delay of about 6 hours.
The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in Houston about 42 hours after landing back.
